Anatoly Balchev began his career in cinema as a composer. Balchev is the author of music for numerous films and theatrical productions; his songs are performed by many Russian stars, and he has also recorded several solo albums.

He tried his hand at directing for the first time in 1990, staging a play based on his own script, "Cafe of Poets," at the CDRI studio (Central House of Art Workers). Also in the early nineties, he became one of the producers of the Russian-American project "Cops in Russia," another version of the popular Fox Television TV show "Cops."

In 1998, he founded the "Apollo-Film" studio. Its first project was a documentary about the life and work of the outstanding Russian artist Mikhail Shemyakin.

The next project was a film about the great Russian wrestler Ivan Yarygin. The documentary "Olympic Village," released by the studio and dedicated to the 2004 Athens Olympics, won several awards at international sports film festivals.

Balchev spent a long time in Hollywood, where he closely studied the specifics of the American filmmaking process. This gave birth to the idea for the joint Russian-American feature film "Passenger from San Francisco."

In Anatoly's creative portfolio, there is a small "stash" — several completed screenplays awaiting their realization.
